What the statute says
Section 56.1(1), in the English text that was read, says nothing in the section affects the powers of the Governor General, including the power to dissolve Parliament at the Governor General’s discretion. Section 56.1(2) says that, subject to subsection (1), each general election must be held on the third Monday of October in the fourth calendar year following polling day for the last general election.
Elections Canada’s May 2025 briefing applies that rule: last general election on April 28, 2025, next fixed date October 15, 2029, and the Act does not prevent another date. October 15, 2029 is the day Elections Canada prints. This page does not recalculate it.
What this election fills
The official voting results of 28 April 2025, table 7, print a total of 343 seats. The House standings page, read on 17 October 2026, also prints 343 seats. The Senate page says the Constitution provides 105 appointed members. Those seats are not filled by the general election.
